Viña Undurraga was established in 1885 by Francisco Undurraga Vicuña, who that year acquired a property called “The Houses of San Vicente”, located in Talagante, 34 kms. from Santiago, Chile’s capital city. Here, he planted vineyards, with vines that he selected and brought personally from the regions of the Rhine in Germany and from Bordeaux, in France. He also built cellars with oak tanks made of wood from Bosnia and from Kentucky in the USA. He hired as well a French winemaker to craft his first wines.
The wines bottled in Santa Ana have since 1885 had great acceptance, both in Chile and worldwide.
UNDURRAGA WAS THE FIRST CHILEAN WINERY TO EXPORT ITS WINES ABROAD, leading the path for
other wineries to make Chilean wines known internationally.
In 1990, started the land expansion, in order to fulfill the increasing demand for high quality wines. As of 2006 Undurraga held 900 hectares in Maipo valley and in Colchagua, with plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Carmenère, Chardonnay and Sémillon.
