This beautiful hard to get to area lies at the southern tip of Ourense in a spectacular setting of mountains and deep river valleys which are tributaries of the Tamega river. Winemaking here goes back hundreds of years indeed Monterrey California takes its name from here. The DO is one of the smallest in Spain consisting of just 685 hectares. The Estate is owned by fashion guru Roberto Verino

Vineyard information: 

Gargalo is set amid sloping vineyards planted primarily with the native white grapes treixadura godello and dona blanca; and native red varieties arauxa mencia and bastarda (some wineries here also have the equally illnamed monstruosa a white grape). The trellised main vineyards now some 20 years old are predominately planted in white varieties.

Food Pairing: 

The lemony and stone fruit characters of Terra do Gargalo Blanco go very well with dishes such as grilled salmon halibut skate and turbot. It is also aromatic enough to partner mild cheeses and is a delight with a well flavoured herb or rocket leaf salad.

Tasting Note: 

Made from Treixadura (for appley acidic thrust) Dona Blanca (lemon and grapefruit buzz) and Godello (for peachy roundness) this is an intensely flavoured slightly herbal (lavender) minerally lemon/lime/apple offering with major concentration tremendous mouth feel mega length and the capacity to age in bottle over 2 to 3 years.
