"Every year, Spanish wine writer José Peñîn and his team taste more than 8,000 wines to produce their annual wine guide, the Guia Peñín. For the second year running, Julia Harding MW went to Madrid to taste all the wines which gained 94 points or more out of 100."
Julia selected a number of wines for special mention and four of those are listed by Moreno Wines. Here they are:
Valdespino (José Estévez), Cardenal Palo Cortado VORS Jerez18 Drink now
Much darker, burnt caramel colour than I expeced for Palo Cortado but it is a 30 yr old. Smells complex, nutty and somehow sweet. Then intensely dry and fresh and much smoother than the Coliseo but with the bitterness of walnuts. Amaziningly tangy and fresh. Great zest and length and really lively. 20% (JH)
Valdespino (José Estévez), Solera 1842 Oloroso VOS Jerez18.5 Drink now
20 year old. Rich bright but deep walnut colour. Smoky sweet dark caramel. Inviting intense aromas of dark aged marmelade but not so sweet. On the palate, sweet but intensely tangy and finishes dry and complex. Amazing concentration with apparent effortlessness. Incredible length. 20% (JH)
Valdespino (José Estévez), Coliseo VORS Amontillado Jerez 17.5 Drink now
Shiny pale walnut and burnished gold. Smoky burnt orange notes. Very powerful but a little harsh at the end. Almost too concentrated but a real electric shock on the palate. 22% (JH)
Pago de Carraovejas, Cuesta De Las Liebres Vendimia Seleccionada Reserva 2004 Ribera del Duero17.5 Drink 2009-16
Fresh blackcurrant and blackberry fruit. Full of zest and life and lovely definition. Firm leathery texture and fresh finish. (JH)
