This historic sekt brand is still based in the great Riesling vineyards of
Schloss Johannisberg in Rheingau. Furst von Metternich takes its name
from a prime mover and shaker of his era, the German prince and
diplomat Metternich. A central figure at the epochal 1815 Congress of
Vienna, Metternich had been gifted Schloss Johannisberg by the
grateful Kaiser Franz of Austria. The vineyards of the Schloss were
already well known as an exceptional Riesling terroir, steep southfacing
terraces and vertiginous slopes on quartzite soil. As the C19th
German poet Heinrich Heine said: ‘if I had so much faith in myself that
I could move mountains, then the Johannisberg would be mountain
that I would have follow me wherever I go!’
Making sparkling wine from the oldest and most venerable Riesling
vineyards started in 1864 when JJ Sohnlein persuaded the estate to
allow the grapes to be used. It was a rapid
success, and it has grown to become the No 1
quality sekt brand in Germany, winning
numerous awards along the way. Now owned by
the world experts in sparkling wine, Henkell, the
future of this fine sekt is assured.
